In her will, Irma Stern left her collections in trust for the encouragement and promotion of Fine Arts. From this the Irma Stern Museum was founded so that these collections would be used to further the arts in South Africa and internationally. And for this reason, we have the chance of sharing with our visitors not only the artworks of Irma Stern and the wonderful artefacts and furniture she collected, but also to see these displayed in her own eccentric home.

Some rooms in the museum are kept substantially as Irma would have had them – most notably her studio where her paintbrushes, easel, rags and painting overcoat lie as she last left them. Other rooms are more impressionistic – reflecting the character of the artist whilst housing temporary exhibitions that draw on the Irma Stern Museum holdings to highlight and engage with art and culture.

The collection within it is owned by the Irma Stern Trust, whilst the museum is administered by the University of Cape Town on behalf of the Trustees of the Irma Stern Trust created in terms of Irma Stern’s will.
