Art Formes

Cape Town

Exhibiting artists: Belinda Blignaut, Ledelle Moe, Siyabonga Fani, Katherine Glenday, Jabulile Nala and Hennie Meye Art Formes was founded in 2021 by art historian Olivia Barrell to showcase the previously overlooked domain of sculpture within contemporary South African art through publications and exhibitions. The first medium under detailed observation is that of clay. Our recent publication, CLAY FORMES, is dedicated to clay and ceramics within contemporary South African art. Art Formes will be showcasing a selection of the featured artists from CLAY FORMES in their booth (ALT 3), namely Belinda Blignaut, Ledelle Moe, Siyabonga Fani, Katherine Glenday, Jabulile Nala and Hennie Meyer - illustrating how clay is beginning to reshape the landscape of contemporary South African art. Art Formes will be presenting contemporary South African artists pushing the bounds of clay to the edge of its sculptural and expressive capabilities. There will be a collection of large-scale terracotta works by ceramic artist Siyabonga Fani, who uses his thumb against the clay’s underside to create streams of fissures that chase his touch, resembling the scorched, blackened flesh of a tree. There will be an installation by porcelain master Katherine Glenday, whose works defy categorisation, extending into the most translucent edges of what we think porcelain should be able to do. In addition, Art Formes will be exhibiting artists that add on to this repertoire of traditionally accepted ceramic forms with artists who use clay when unprocessed or unfired — broadening the scope of artistic expression through clay. The Art Formes’ booth will include an installation of natural earth pigments and works on cloth by interdisciplinary artist Belinda Blignaut, who is forging a new impulse in contemporary ceramics worldwide, that of unprocessed wild clay. In addition, a large carved installation in earth and concrete by sculptor Ledelle Moe will be on display.
